Se você se aprofundar no assunto, perceberá que a fonte do corpo — o esperma masculino e o óvulo feminino — é em si a essência do alimento consumido pelos pais; que a forma física é feita e alimentada pelos cinco elementos que constituem o alimento; e também que muitas vezes o corpo de uma criatura se torna o alimento para outra criatura

Cierta tarde, un visitante extranjero se dirigió a Sri Nisargadatta con estas palabras. Era un hombre de cuarenta y tantos años, soberbio, seguro de sí y un poco agresivo. La conversación se desarrolló entonces sobre las siguientes líneas:

Maharaj: Antes de que consideremos qué “está bien” y qué “está mal”, dime por favor quién hace esta pregunta.

Visitante : ¿Cómo? “Yo”, desde luego.

¿Y quién es ése?

Yo. Este “yo”, quien está sentado frente a ti.

¿Y tú crees que eso eres?

Me ves. Yo me veo. ¿En qué puede haber duda?

¿Te refieres a este objeto que tengo frente a mí? Retrocede en tu memoria tanto como te sea posible; ¿cuál es el recuerdo más antiguo que guardas de lo que crees ser?

[Después de un par de minutos]: ...Quizá el primer recuerdo que tengo sea el de verme cuidado y abrazado por mi madre.

Como un niño muy pequeño, quieres decir. ¿Tú dirías que el hombre triunfador de la actualidad es ese mismo niño desvalido, o alguien distinto?

Sin duda es el mismo.

Bien. Ahora, si vuelves la vista más atrás, estarás de acuerdo en que ese niño, al cual recuerdas, es el mismo al que dio a luz tu madre, el cual alguna vez fue tan desvalido que no se daba cuenta siquiera de lo que sucedía cuando su cuerpo realizaba las funciones físicas naturales, y sólo podía llorar al sentir dolor o hambre.

Sí, yo era ese niño.

Y antes de que ese bebé adquiriera un cuerpo y nacieras, ¿qué eras?

No entiendo.

Sí entiendes. Piensa. ¿Qué sucedió en el vientre de tu madre?, ¿qué fue lo que se desarrolló hasta convertirse en un cuerpo con huesos, sangre, médula, músculos, durante un periodo de nueve meses?, ¿no fue un espermatozoide combinado con un óvulo en el vientre femenino donde se inició una nueva vida, pasando además durante el proceso por numerosas contingencias? ¿Es acaso ese espermatozoide infinitesimalmente pequeño el que se enorgullece ahora de sus logros? ¿Quién te esperaba particularmente a ti? ¿Tu madre, tu padre?, ¿ellos te querían en especial a ti como hijo? ¿Tiene algo que ver contigo el hecho de haber nacido de estos padres en particular?

Estoy asombrado, en realidad nunca había pensado en ello.

Precisamente. Reflexiona a este respecto. Luego tal vez puedas hacerte una idea de tu verdadera identidad. Medita más tarde sobre si puedes enorgullecerte de lo que has “logrado”.

Creo que empiezo a entender lo que quieres decir.

Si ahondas más en esto, te darás cuenta de que el origen del cuerpo —el espermatozoide y el óvulo— es, en sí, la esencia del alimento que consumieron los padres; que la forma física está compuesta, y se alimenta, de los cinco elementos que constituyen el alimento; te darás cuenta también de que, con mucha frecuencia, el cuerpo de una criatura se convierte en el alimento de otra.

Pero seguramente yo, como tal, debo de ser una cosa distinta de este cuerpo-alimento.

En realidad lo eres, pero no una “cosa”. Indaga qué es lo que da sensibilidad a un ser sensible, aquello sin lo cual no sabrías siquiera de tu existencia, y mucho menos de la del mundo exterior. Y, por último, ve más a fondo aún y analiza si esta cualidad de ser, esta conciencia, no está sujeta al tiempo.

Por supuesto profundizaré en las diversas cuestiones que me has planteado, aunque confieso que nunca antes había explorado estos terrenos y me siento un poco aturdido a causa de mi ignorancia en estos nuevos campos a los que me has abierto. Vendré a verte en otra ocasión, maestro.

“I have worked hard and I now consider myself a very successful man. I would be a hypocrite if I did not admit that I have a considerable amount of satisfaction and, yes, a certain amount of pride too in my achievement. Would that be wrong?“

One evening a foreign visitor addressed Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj with these words. He was in his mid forties — smug, self-confident and a bit aggressive. Conversation then proceeded along the following lines:

Maharaj: Before we consider what is ‘right’ and what is ‘wrong’, please tell me who is asking this question.

Visitor:  Why, ‘me’, of course.

M: And who is that?

V: Me. This ‘me’, who is sitting in front of you.

M: And you think that that is you?

V: You see me. I see myself. Where is the doubt?

M: You mean this object that is before me? What is your earliest recollection of this object that you think you are. Think as far back as you can.

V:  The earliest recollection would perhaps be of being caressed and cuddled by my mother.

M: You mean, as a tiny infant. Would you say that the successful man of today is the same helpless infant, or is it someone else?

V: It is undoubtedly the same

M: Good. Now, if you think further back, would you agree that this infant, which you can recollect, is the same baby that was born to your mother, that was once too helpless even to realize what was happening when its little body was going through its natural physical functions, and could only cry when it was hungry or in pain?

V: Yes, I was that baby.

M: And before the baby acquired its body and was delivered what were you?

V: I don’t understand.

M: You do understand. Think. What happened in your mother’s womb? What was developing into a body with bones, blood, marrow, muscles etc., over a period of nine months? Was it not a male sperm cell that combined with ovum in the female womb thus beginning a new life and, in the process, going through numerous hazards? Who guarded this new life during this period of hazards? Is it not that very infinitesimally tiny sperm cell which is now so proud of his achievements? And who asked particularly for you? Your mother? Your father? Did they particularly want you for a son? Did you have anything to do with being born to these particular parents?

V: I am afraid, I really haven’t thought along these lines.

M: Exactly. Do think along these lines. Then perhaps you will have some idea of your true identity. Thereafter, consider if you could possibly be proud of what you have ‘achieved’.

V: I think, I begin to understand what you are driving at.

M: If you go deeper into the matter, you will realize that the source of the body—the male sperm and the female ovum— is in itself the essence of food consumed by the parents; that the physical form is made of, and fed by, the five elements constituting the food; and also that quite often the body of one creature does become the food for another creature

V: But, surely, I, as such, must be something other than this food-body.

M: Indeed you are, but not some ‘thing’. Find out what it is that gives sentience to a sentient being, that without which you would not even know that you exist, let alone the world outside. And finally, go deeper yet and examine if this beingness, this consciousness itself is not time-bound.

V: I shall certainly go into the various questions you have raised, although I must confess that I have never explored these areas before, and I feel almost giddy in my ignorance of the new spheres you have opened up before me. I will come and see you again, sir.

M: You are always welcome.
