• Institucionalização Acadêmica do Esoterismo Ocidental: Ao lado de Antoine Faivre, Wouter Hanegraaff e Joscelyn Godwin, Versluis consolidou o estudo crítico do esoterismo ocidental como disciplina universitária rigorosa, fundando e presidindo a Association for the Study of Esotericism (ASE) e dirigindo a revista acadêmica Esoterica.
• O Esoterismo na Formação da Literatura Norte-Americana: Em American Transcendentalism and Asian Religions e The Esoteric Origins of the American Renaissance, revelou a profunda influência de tradições herméticas, neoplatônicas, teosóficas e das filosofias orientais (vedanta e budismo) no pensamento de Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Walt Whitman e Bronson Alcott.
• Teosofia Cristã e Tradição Sofiológica: Dedicou exaustivos estudos monográficos à tradição da teosofia pós-renascentista e boehmiana (iniciada por Jakob Böhme e continuada por autores como John Pordage e Jane Leade), mapeando a linhagem contemplativa da Santa Sofia (Sabedoria Divina) no cristianismo heterodoxo do Ocidente.
